Moving is one of the most stressful life events — right up there with changing jobs and getting married. The good news is that most of that stress comes from poor planning, not the move itself. With the right checklist, you can stay ahead of every deadline and walk into your new home feeling organized instead of overwhelmed.
This checklist is specifically tailored for San Jose and Bay Area moves. It includes the local permits, utility providers, and logistical details that generic checklists miss.
8 Weeks Before Your Move
- Research moving companies. Get at least 3 in-home estimates. Verify USDOT and California CAL-T license numbers. Check Google reviews and BBB ratings. Start early — San Jose movers book up fast during summer.
- Set your budget. Factor in movers, packing materials, deposits, utility setup fees, and any overlap in rent or mortgage payments.
- Start decluttering. Go room by room. Donate, sell, or trash anything you have not used in the past year. Less stuff means a faster, cheaper move. Schedule a donation pickup through Goodwill or the Salvation Army.
- Notify your landlord if you are renting. Most San Jose leases require 30 days written notice.
6 Weeks Before

- Transfer utilities. San Jose Water Company, PG&E, and your internet/cable provider all need 1–2 weeks notice. Schedule disconnection at the old address and connection at the new one for the same day.
- Update your address with banks, credit cards, insurance providers, DMV, voter registration, subscriptions, and Amazon.
- Arrange school transfers if you have children. San Jose Unified School District requires proof of residency in the new attendance area. Contact the new school for enrollment paperwork.
- Plan for pets. Board them on moving day or arrange for a friend to watch them. A house full of open doors and heavy furniture is dangerous for animals.
2 Weeks Before
- Confirm your moving date and time with your movers. Get the crew lead's name and phone number.
- Pack an essentials box — the box you open first. Include toilet paper, paper towels, soap, phone chargers, snacks, water bottles, a change of clothes, basic tools, and important documents.
- Handle parking permits. Many San Jose neighborhoods (especially downtown and Willow Glen) require parking permits for moving trucks. Your moving company should handle this, but confirm.
- Arrange elevator reservations if you live in a condo or apartment building. Most buildings require 48-hour notice and limit moves to specific hours.
- Defrost your freezer 24 hours before the move if you are moving the refrigerator.
Moving Day
- Be home when the crew arrives. Walk them through the house and point out anything fragile, valuable, or tricky to move.
- Do a final walkthrough of every room, closet, cabinet, and the garage. Check the attic, basement, and outdoor storage.
- Photograph the condition of both homes — floors, walls, doorways. This protects you and the movers from disputes.
- Keep valuables with you. Jewelry, important documents, medications, and laptop go in your car — not the truck.
- Tip your movers if they did a great job. Industry standard is $20–$50 per mover for a local move, more for a particularly difficult or long move.
After the Move
- Unpack essentials first. Kitchen, bathrooms, bedrooms. Everything else can wait.
- Update your driver's license. California law requires you to notify the DMV within 10 days of moving. You can do it online at dmv.ca.gov.
- Explore your new neighborhood. Find the nearest grocery store, pharmacy, urgent care, and gas station. Introduce yourself to neighbors.

- Street parking in downtown San Jose, Japantown, and Willow Glen can be tight. Ask your movers about parking permits and whether they have done moves in your neighborhood before.
